Easy Domain Name Registration
Posted by: JakkiFollowing some requests from our newsletter subscribers we have started a Back to Basics section in the newsletter and to compliment that we are including more details here.
This week we are looking at Easy Domain Name Registration
But lets take one step back, first all of all you need to decide on a domain name and for the maximum exposure online this ideally needs to incorporate the keywords you want to rank for in the search engines. The more targetted these keywords are for your market the higher up the search engine listings you are likely to find yourself.
If you are trying to build a brand name and you want to register that as a domain name then you will need to improve your search engine rankings by for example keyword rich posts on your blog and keyword rich links to your blog, which is outside of the focus of this article.
However, if we concentrate on domains containing your keywords then you need to spend some time doing some research on this and the best free tool for this is Google’s Keyword Tool, click here to access it. This will give you the latest monthly searches for different keyword phrases.
But to rank higher in the search engines you need to think about your competition too.
Weight loss would be far too competitive a term but if you were targetting weight loss for new moms that would be a far less competitive keyword phrase and you could register the domain name www.weightlossfornewmoms.com (that domain has been taken, I checked, but hopefully you get the idea)
You can get a broad idea of the competition for your keyword phrase by typing it into the search bar in Google.com. Below the search bar will be the number of results for your phrase, now this is what is known as a broad match, which means that all of those results (websites) will not necessarily contain your term they might only contain new moms for example. So we want a phrase match and you get that by putting quotes around your phrase “weight loss for new moms” so we have immediately reduced the results from over 61 million down to 3,000, as you can see in the screen shots below.
Now lets talk about domain registrars:
They are not all created equal. Some are really difficult to get to grips with especially if you are new online. For example Go Daddy is a popular domain registrar but I would not recommend them, as trying to buy a domain name from them can be a minefield with additional offers, add-ons etc constantly flashing up on your screen rather than just taking you to the checkout. Not good.
We like to keep things simple, right from the purchase through to pointing your domain to your webhost (we’ll cover this in the next edition of Back To Basics) through to renewal. For that reason we recommend Namecheap.com.
In fact an Internet Marketing Forum that I am a member of had this very discussion last week and the host that the most marketers on there are using is Namecheap. They have a very easy to use (and understand) website and their prices are also very good – generally around $9 for a .com domain, though we do share a trick for getting them cheaper in the video below.
If you want a .co.uk domain name we tend to use and recommend www.123-reg.co.uk also very easy to use.
We have put together a video for you showing how to get your domain name registered with Namecheap.com and you can watch it by clicking the link below.
In the next edition we will be looking at web hosting and how to point your domain name to your webhost, think of it like telling your registrar the address of your website.
