Getting On Page #1 of Google – Long Tail Keywords Considered
Posted by: JakkiGetting onto the first page of Google is the dream of most, if not all, website owners. Now with millions of competing websites this can be quite a task, especially if the keyword phrases you are optimising your site for are only one or two words in length and have massive competition such as weight loss or dog training. On that basis you are setting yourself a monumental task which you probably will never succeed at.
However, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, as the saying goes, it’s a horrible saying you’ll probably agree, but it means there’s more than one way to achieve your objective.
Reading a website a couple of days ago, they presented the argument that ranking for long tail keywords that incorporate or are associated with the main keyword of your website is a better way to go. So for example if your main keyword was in fact dog training for which there are masses of competing pages (62,000,000):

a long tail keyword that you maybe could rank well for could be dog training classes in birmingham (471000)
or buy dog training clicker (408000 pages):
These are still quite high amounts of competition, but you get the idea.
The point being that if you build up lots of content on your website around long tail keywords associated with your main keyword and that content is relevant to the overall theme of your website, then your website will in the long term rank better for your main keyword.
So, when you are planning your website, its worth spending some time researching the long tail keywords that could drive small but consistent amounts of traffic to your website, which over time will build into a not insignificant amount of traffic and improve your search engine rankings.
The video below explains more about this concept and how to find long tail keywords:
